Blues...it's a universal solvent in music. There's blues in jazz, R & B, roots rock and soul, country, Cajun, Latin, funk, hip-hop, rock and pop... It's everywhere! We'll hear from all corners of the musical map including Bessie Smith, Buddy Guy, Freddy Fender and Clifton Chenier and more. Then an hour with Octogenarian electric country blues man Little Freddie King live from Marigny Studios in New Orleans.

DREAMERS THEN AND NOW: ERIC ANDERSEN & SAMANTHA FISH

We explore the world of daydreams, nostalgia, fantasy and future selves. Time travel with songwriting scenester Eric Andersen back to his days hanging with the Beats at City Lights bookstore and Greenwich Village's folk music scene, train-riding across Canada with Janis Joplin, Buddy Guy and the Grateful Dead and tripping out on music and hallucinogens. Sit in with youthful blues guitar-slinger Samantha Fish for an in-studio performance and conversation as she waxes political and poetic about the "American Dream" and tells of growing up in Kansas City pursuing her childhood dream to take the stage. And hear moon-eyed romantic numbers from Bobby Darin and Patsy Cline and riverine reveries from Lee Dorsey and Roy Orbison.

BLUES OLD AND NEW: THE BLACK KEYS, ROBERT FINLEY & LUKE WINSLOW-KING

We trace the musical DNA and psychic aura of the blues from its Delta roots to Chicago's electric pioneers, across a patchwork of regional styles and modern day innovators. In an archival interview we talk with blues rockers the Black Keys of Akron, Ohio, about defying genre, eschewing nostalgia, and the blues progenitors who blurred labels like primitive and avant-garde. Age Don't Mean a Thing for 66-year-old Louisiana bluesman Robert Finley, who caught a big break in the last couple years and is now rocking the mic and hitting the road harder than ever. From Cadillac, Michigan to the Crescent City, Luke Winslow-King recalls the bad times and breakups that gave him a deeper understanding of the blues and inspired him to make I'm Glad Trouble Don't Last Always. Plus, we load up the jukebox with our favorites from Howlin' Wolf and Buddy Guy, Johnny Burnette and Buddy Holly, Willie Nelson and Bonnie Raitt.

LIVING WITH THE BLUES

This week on American Routes we're roaming the highways, byways and crossroads in search of the blues. We sit down with blues humanist Bill Ferris to talk about his life documenting music, visit with Delta piano blues chanteuse Eden Brent and catch up with Baton Rouge to Chicago "legend" Buddy Guy. Hang out with us on Hwy. 61 at Teddy's Juke Joint, hear some Hill Country family jams, and stories from the master of the gut-bucket blues, Little Freddie King.

DAMN RIGHT... MUDDY AND BUDDY GOT THE BLUES!

We've got the Blues... and American Routes focuses on two of the genre's heavyweights: the late Muddy Waters from Rolling Fork, MS, and the very much alive Buddy Guy, formerly of Baton Rouge, LA. First, a portrait of Muddy from his band members James Cotton, Willie Smith and Bob Margolin, with biographer Robert Gordon. Then Buddy Guy, who played guitar with Waters as a young rising star on the influential 1964 LP "Muddy Waters: Folk Singer," and has been regarded as one of finest players of electric city blues for years. We'll talk with Guy about his extraordinary life, his most recent CD "Blues Singer"--an acoustic tribute to the '64 Muddy album--and his present-day Chicago nightclub devoted to the blues.
