Known as the Soul Queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas was actually born outside the city in Pontchatoula. At age 20 she signed with the Minit label, in 1962 cutting "It's Raining," followed soon after with "Ruler of My Heart." Thomas continued to record through the '70s to lesser success and took several years hiatus before making the first of a succession of soul and gospel recordings for the Rounder label bringing her back into the spotlight with great acclaim.

AFTER THE STORM: KATRINA AT 15

15 years ago the levees failed after Hurricane Katrina and covered 80% of New Orleans in water. The Federal flood left a human and ecological disaster in its wake. We take a look back at the catastrophe, recovery and renewed hope for the culture of the Crescent City with Dr. John, Irma Thomas, the Rebirth Brass Band and Allen Toussaint and archival audio from our first broadcast After the Storm in September 2005. image of Fats Domino's house in the Lower Ninth Ward, four months after Hurricane Katrina, 2005 by Ethan Miller/Getty Images

AND SO FOURTH!

Happy July Fourth! Add some sizzle to your backyard barbecue with hot licks from the stage as we road trip from New Orleans to Butte, Montana. We start off at Preservation Hall in the French Quarter for vocal fireworks from gospel quartet the Blind Boys of Alabama and Crescent City soul singer Irma Thomas, both backed by the mojo masters of Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Then we wind our way across the Great Plains to the Montana Folk Festival for a picnic of down home sounds by Western swing darlings the Quebe Sisters, Cajun accordionist Bruce Daigrepont, reggae veteran Clinton Fearon and rockabilly guitarist Albert Lee. From Big River to Big Sky, the music is really cooking and you're cordially invited to tune in! All songs in Hour 2 are live from the 2017 Montana Folk Festival, courtesy of Montana Public Radio.

HOLIDAY SOUL AND SPIRIT: LIVE FROM PRESERVATION HALL WITH IRMA THOMAS & THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA

For this special holiday edition of American Routes, we get into the spirit of the season with live performances by Irma Thomas, the Soul Queen of New Orleans, and gospel greats the Blind Boys of Alabama at Preservation Hall in the French Quarter. Blind Boys' founding member Jimmy Carter tells of his long life on the road through the Jim Crow South and around the world, and Irma Thomas describes her gospel roots and soul music's role in protest and healing. Plus, we keep the holiday festivities going with a joyous jukebox of blues and jazz, Cajun and country, solstice and seasonal tunes.

REMEMBERING ALLEN TOUSSAINT: A SAINT FOR ALL SEASONS

We celebrate the songmaker, piano "professor" and producer from New Orleans who passed away suddenly in November 2015. A beloved Creole gentleman, Allen Toussaint was a hometown hero and giant on the American music scene. He wrote over 800 songs and produced regional and national hit records such as "Java" (Al Hirt), "Mother-in-Law" (Ernie K-Doe), "I Like it Like That" (Chris Kenner), "It's Raining" (Irma Thomas), "Yes We Can" (Lee Dorsey) among others. Toussaint worked closely with the Meters, Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello. He is in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and received the National Medal of Arts. Allen Toussaint's famed autobiographical song is "Southern Nights."
